Extended Self

When an object holds enough sentimental value that it becomes a representation of one’s passion and presence, it assumes a position within the individual that it embodies. This series of diptychs explores the objects that shape and represent a part of us, a part of our extended self, external to our bodies but very much a part of us on the inside.

As a striving filmmaker, my first documentary film, “Rockers, The American Black Biker Experience” was one of my great achievements and I have many more great stories to tell.

My Grandfather always cocked my hat off to the side and say to me, ‘Wearing a hat straight was for squares. You must wear the hat, you can’t let the hat wear you’.

This was a gift from the late, great Jeff Healey who said to me after 2 weeks of recordings, ‘Awe, just take it.’ I love this guitar. It’s been on every tour, every recording I’ve ever done. Thanks Jeff.

My Fondest memories growing up in Newfoundland all started in someone’s kitchen. My mother was a big part of that because she always involved us in the kitchen. This cookie jar epitomizes that relationship and upbringing for me. It’s bittersweet that she never got the chance to see me do what I love, cook for a living.

This is one of the only things I have left of my Uncle. Everything else he ever created burned in a fire. He was the inspiration to my work, even though he died when I was 13.

I got this bag the day before I left for a big trip to Europe after my old bag had given up on me. Ever since, this bag has been with me everywhere I’ve gone. Even if I don’t draw for months, I have this bag with me and all my supplies in it in case a spur of the moment happens and I want to draw.
